7 inspiring newspapers hot off the press in January
Our first roundup of the year features 7 brilliant projects, including a newspaper with artwork that quite literally leaps off the page...
March is here, bringing more daylight and more newspapers! In this roundup: a design newsletter makes the leap from inbox to print, r.e.m. beauty brings a glow to broadsheets and a journalist's wedding is front page news – plus more brilliant projects in print.
Newsletter to newspaper
Love & Other Rugs, a dating and design newsletter by Lily Sullivan, started as something you scroll through in your inbox. Now you have to hold it with both hands. The second edition of her tabloid is 52 pages of essays, travel guides and shopping recommendations, plus a double-sided poster in the centre.
"I love that you have to hold it with two hands!"
“When I started the newsletter, I knew a print component was crucial,” says Lily. “I need my writing to have a home beyond the internet.” The print edition has also been a way to connect with readers offline – she hosted a launch party to celebrate, bringing the Love & Other Rugs community together in person. It’s now stocked in 12 stores across the US, including Casa Magazines and McNally Jackson in NYC.
Radiant read
Ariana Grande’s r.e.m. beauty brought its dreamglow collection to life with a luminous broadsheet. Featuring large-scale campaign photography across double-page spreads, the newspaper set the scene at their dreamglow launch events in Miami and Nashville. It was displayed on tables, held up for photos and then taken home as a dreamy souvenir.
Wild times
London is getting wilder, one newspaper at a time. This tabloid from London National Park City is packed with ideas for connecting with nature in the city, from creative projects to learning local bird calls. There’s a crowd-sourced poem by volunteers, stories from community groups and a beautiful pull-out poster by ranger and illustrator Matthew Ponting.
It's printed on recycled newsprint to reflect their sustainability ethos, and communications manager Miriam Habte Sellasie says they've had a steady stream of donations since it launched.
Marriage material
Extra, extra! Amber and Tom are married! Guests at their wedding were handed a custom newspaper as an order of service, filled with details written up like news items and a schedule of events styled like a TV guide. The couple used our free vintage Canva template as a starting point, but made the digital tabloid entirely their own. We love these photos from the ceremony, captured by Belles and Confetti.
"My now husband is a journalist, so as soon as we got engaged we knew Newspaper Club was going to be part of our wedding!"
Scent-sational news
Fragrance brand Jo Loves used newsprint to launch their new rosé-inspired candle, sharing the story behind the scent in a 4-page digital tabloid. Following the success of their winter edition, this latest issue continues to bring the brand’s story to life in print. “Customers always comment on how unique the newspapers are and love to photograph them!” says the team.
Year in print
Artist Natasha Ahmed created The Ephemeral News as a printed time capsule – an illustrated record of the clothes, jewellery and beauty products that defined her 2024. She describes the digital tabloid as somewhere between a personal diary and a newsletter to friends. Flip through the newspaper on Instagram!
Style section
Almanac puts the future of fashion reporting in print. Made by students from the MA Fashion Journalism and Content Creation course – led by Andrew Tucker – at London College of Fashion, the tabloid is a tangible way for emerging voices to connect with the industry.
“A newspaper lets us reach people outside of our campus,” says LCF’s Bex Cassie. “Fashion journalism is often a very solitary practice, so seeing this body of work come together as a collective is really exciting.”
To print or not to print
Romeo, Romeo, read all about it! This newspaper-style programme was created for the Belgrade Theatre’s production of Romeo and Juliet. They wanted something different to match their innovative adaptation – our traditional tabloid worked as both a stage prop and a keepsake. “The audience loved it,” says designer Jessica Milner. “Everyone had a copy in their hands!”
