Every month, we print hundreds of exciting, creative, well-designed newspapers and put together a roundup of our favourites. Welcome to our first edition of 2019!
Below, some of the newspapers that stood out in January: an illustrated guide to the immigrant-run restaurants of Kansas City, Missouri, a visual tribute to the music of Prince and a new surfing magazine that's opening up the sport to newcomers.

Australian artist David McLeod creates surreal digital illustrations for brands like Nike, IBM, Dropbox and MAC Cosmetics. His agency, MUCH Creative, created this mini newspaper as a lightweight alternative to the standard artist portfolio.
“We wanted something to showcase our artist’s work that could also be left behind, shared and collected,” says MUCH founder Matthew LeBaron. “Our clients LOVE the newspaper format—the details are sharp, the colors pop and the textures shine through every image.”

Twenty-seven artists created works inspired by the music of Prince for If I Was Your Girlfriend: A Jam, an exhibition at Belmacz Gallery celebrating the the singer’s legacy.
This newspaper catalogue—which includes a playlist compiled by Jarvis Cocker—was designed by Craig Sinnamon. “I was really keen to add gradiated purple punctuation,” he says. “This was my reference to Prince’s love of symbols—it took me a day to colour every piece of punctuation in all the texts. I was aware of the risk of colour misregistration, but I felt the risk was worth taking. We were not disappointed.”

New Market Goods works with artisans in Bangladesh to produce hand-woven garments made in ethical factories. They used a tabloid newspaper to launch their 2019 collection: “Normally, we print small postcards but we love our photography [shot by Tropico Photo] and think the tabloid format really helps celebrate it in large format!”

Despite taking its name from the rare perfect score in a surfing contest, Twenty Magazine aims to make the sport more accessible to newcomers. In the third issue, published as a tabloid newspaper, we meet a woman who hopped on a board for the first time at age 52 and learn about artificial wave machines that are opening up surfing to a larger audience. (The cover illustration above by Xiao Hua Yang shows Surf Ranch, a 700-yard wave pool in Lemoore, California.)

“Since our first exhibition, we’ve printed catalogs for each show using Newspaper Club,” says Crit co-founder Elie Andersen. “We love the opportunity to create a piece that’s informational and beautiful enough to serve as a token of memory for our community.”
